Updating My Craft Room: Why It Gets Worse Before It Gets Better

If you’ve ever tackled a big organizing project—especially in a craft room—you already know the unspoken rule: it absolutely gets worse before it gets better.

When I decided to update my craft room, I had grand plans. Pinterest boards full of pegboard inspiration, rolling carts, clear bins with neatly labeled contents, and a vision of color-coded bliss danced in my head. What I forgot to factor in? The absolute mess it would take to get there.

The Chaos Phase

It all started innocently enough. I pulled a few things off a shelf to “see what I had.” Then I opened a drawer and dumped its contents into a basket. Before I knew it, every surface was covered in cardstock, stamps, and that mysterious glitter that reappears no matter how often I vacuum.

At some point, I was sitting cross-legged in the middle of the chaos, surrounded by five pairs of craft scissors, four glue guns (why do I have four?!), and a shocking number of MISTI items.

I questioned everything:
Why did I start this?
Am I a supply hoarder? (YES)
Will I ever see the floor again? (ALSO YES)

Finding the Fun in Organization

But then came the turning point. I discovered some really fun and clever ways to organize things. Like using reusing storage containers that had been previously filled with junk. I found joy in stacking rainbow-colored ink blenders onto shelves and turning liptstick holders into a home from small ink blending brushes.

Labeling bins became a small thrill. (There’s something deeply satisfying about putting a label on a container and actually knowing what’s inside of it.)

And the best part? Rediscovering supplies I forgot I even owned. Suddenly, I had project ideas again—things I’d meant to do but lost track of in the clutter.

I even found an old Creative Memories guillotine trimmer. I am keeping it by the way.

The Payoff

After several days of stepping around piles, enduring minor paper cuts, and muttering to myself, my new craft room finally took shape. Everything has a home, and I can actually see my workspace. (And yes, I downsized to less trimmers.)

It’s not just prettier—it’s more functional. I feel inspired again, like my space is finally supporting my creativity instead of stifling it under a mountain of disorganiztion.

Final Thoughts

So if you’re staring down a messy project and feeling overwhelmed, hang in there. The mess is temporary. The joy of rediscovery and the peace of an organized space? Totally worth it.

And remember: sometimes you have to pull everything out and make a beautiful disaster before you can create a beautiful craft room.

I have more to do but we are moving in the right direction.
